Cleaning vinegar or regular vinegar in the washer?

Always choose white vinegar for the washer. We recommend using regular white vinegar, also known as distilled or spirit vinegar. Cleaning vinegar is not a good idea for the washer. Find out why below.

Regular vinegar (white vinegar/distilled vinegar)

White vinegar is the better choice as it is less acidic than cleaning vinegar. Moreover, it is a natural product, while cleaning vinegar is synthetic. The terms "regular vinegar," "white vinegar," and "distilled vinegar" all refer to the same type. This type of vinegar is safe for consumption and suitable for washers.

Cleaning vinegar

As the name suggests, cleaning vinegar is meant for cleaning. It is much more acidic than regular vinegar and is therefore not safe for consumption or use in the washer. It should also not be used to clean the washer. Cleaning vinegar is commonly used for removing limescale or as a drain cleaner.

How much vinegar to use in the washer?

The amount depends on the purpose and type of laundry. Here are some good guidelines:

  • For a regular wash (as a fabric softener): 100 - 120 ml

  • For smelly laundry (as a fabric softener and odour remover): 150 - 200 ml

  • To clean the washer: 200 - 250 ml (every 3 months)

Vinegar in the washer – which compartment?

Pour the vinegar into the fabric softener compartment if using it as a softener or odour remover. If you want to clean the washer with vinegar, pour it directly into the drum or the detergent compartment.

Can vinegar be used with detergent?

Yes. However, make sure to put the detergent in the detergent compartment and the vinegar in the fabric softener compartment. Mixing them directly can reduce the effectiveness of the detergent. Also, keep in mind that vinegar does not replace detergent. While it helps with odour removal and softening, it does not remove tough stains. For that, you still need detergent.

Why use vinegar in the washer?

Vinegar has several benefits for your laundry. It can be used as a fabric softener and has additional advantages:

  • Removes unpleasant odours from your clothes.

  • Reduces limescale buildup, contributing to a longer lifespan for your washer.

  • Helps preserve colours, especially in dark clothing, preventing them from fading quickly.

Vinegar as a fabric softener

Vinegar is a great natural alternative to fabric softener. It is cheaper than regular fabric softener and does not leave a residue on your laundry. Regular fabric softener leaves a coating on fabrics, which can reduce moisture absorption—particularly inconvenient for hand towels and tea towels. Vinegar softens fabrics without leaving any residue.

Why not use vinegar in the washer?

While vinegar has many advantages, there are also a few downsides.

Reasons not to use vinegar in the washer:

1. Vinegar can cause wear and tear

Using too much vinegar too often can damage rubber parts over time, such as the door seal, potentially leading to leaks.

2. Vinegar should not be mixed with bleach

When vinegar and chlorine-based bleach come into contact, they create a chemical reaction that releases toxic gases.

3. Vinegar has a strong smell

Most people don’t find the scent of vinegar pleasant, whereas regular fabric softener smells nice. The strong vinegar smell can be overwhelming, but fortunately, it disappears once the laundry is dry.

4. Vinegar is not suitable for delicate fabrics

Vinegar can weaken the fibres of delicate fabrics such as silk and wool. It is best to avoid using vinegar when washing these materials.
